Might be the last week for this ride. It's getting darker and darker earlier and earlier. We are already cutting out a fair amount of the ride due to lack of light. Going up hill to Northbrook, we real attacks but just a killer pace up the hill then the pace really picked up on the flat. One by one, people dropped off the back, leaving me pretty pleased to be in an elite group of 4 consisting of myself, Dr. Smooth, Fergie, and Trey. But finally, I, too, dropped off. After the harder parts of the ride, we had a conversational roll back to town. I got to talk to Ferg about his PowerTap system. He seemed happy with the system, but I still don't see the real benefit, nor can I justify the cost.

Tonight on the ride we were coming down this hill around a bend a this car (should I say Klunker) is backing out of his driveway. A car is coming from the other way. He should have seen us or the other car or both. I was second in the line and start yelling "SLOWING, SLOWING, SLOWING" and then finally "STOPPING". This guy throws it into drive and takes off in the direction that we were heading with his big meaty hand shoved out the window flashing us the bird. Yeah, I guess it was our fault he pulled out in front of us.

Cross season is almost here, and I ain't got a bike. I tried Campo 28's on my old road bike -- I had to deflate them to a ridiculously low pressure to get them into the frame, and when re-inflated they rubbed my campy single pivots. My old Wheeler has a Mag 21 with an 1-1/4" Head tube which makes its use for CX racing doubtful and makes conversion relatively expensive. I mean by the time I convert the Wheeler (i.e. new headtube adapter, new headset, new rigid fork, new stem, maybe new drop bars, new front wheel), I'd be well on my way to a new frame onto which I could just transfer my Ultegra 600 stuff from the Ox. My dual-suspension Fuel 95 would be a bitch to shoulder. There's a part of me that wants to buy a new bike, but there's a part of me that likes keeping as much of the green as possible. Any htoughts or ideas?

Ride with GR

45 miles -- did surprisingly well considering the lactic acid still in my legs from yesterday's run.

Run!

Today, I went for a run. After the softball incident I have been reluctant to do much off the bike outside of a brisk walk. With the remants of Ivan having just come through the roads were too messy and likely flooded for a good road ride, and with cross season right around the corner it seemed a good impetus to run. Again, still learning.

dst: 46.47 miles
av: 21.5 mph
time: 2.09.02

Victory Ride -- 8/24/2004

Victory Ride -- First up hill to NBO. It was getting dark on the way home. Legs and stomach started cramping. Not enough to eat or drink. And sleep was almost non-existent last night. However, still was able to go off the front, chase, and generally work hard without losing any laps. I am glad to see progress. Have to be careful though, as I have a tendency to become obsessive with cycling and other athletic endeavors. Family still needs to come first. That said, I am looking very much forward to attempting the full psychlo-cross season and doing as many of the MAC Series races as possible.

dst: 50.56 miles
av: 21.8 mph
time: 2.18.39

Victory Ride again -- 8/17/2004

Didn't ride over this past weekend. Travelled to Ohio for family reunion. 11 hours driving Friday. 12 hours driving Sunday.

Tonight's ride was fast from the start. No need to worry about picking a fight on the way up the big hill. The Bean machine had a couple or more escape and well-organized but unmotivated group of 12 or so provided chase. I was in that chase, and just couldn't seem to get folks motivated to chase them down. They slowed down and 'let' us capture them down at the Brandywine. My new nemesis in Stargazer's. I can be right on Dr. Smooth's wheel at the relatively shallow climb leading up to it, and then we turn that corner, the road goes up, and I go backwards -- well, relative to RR and others. I have to remind myself that a few weeks ago I couldn't hang with the weakest riders in the group and now I'm able to hang with the top 5 or so. Stargazer's will eventually be defeated.

SG and RR and other Bob like to take it very easy back to WC from Dtown. It's almost too slow. We were at 20+ mph down into Dtown, and then by the time I get home we're down to ~17. I feel with my other obligations, I need to work a bit harder when I do get out. Maybe I'll start riding back solo.

dst: 37.4 miles
av: ~17 mph
time: 2.12.26

8/13/2004 -- CTS Climbing Video

Rained pretty well last night, so skipped 'worlds' -- plus we were trying to pack to get out of here for trip to Ohio for reunion. Just as last Tues, no one seemed very interested in mixing it up just before Northbrook and the hill leading up to it. So again, I found myself going off the front. Found myself asking "what am I doing?" again -- b/c although I didn't mention it last week since the pace seemed high enough and one of the bean's guys was there, I wasn't sure that my form was improving b/c several of the heavy hitters from bean's (including Reuther) weren't there, and that, perhaps, my ability to attack and finish with the lead group last week was a bit of fluke. But back to tonight, I managed to stay away until about 90% up the hill to Northbrook, at which point, the well-oiled bean machine pulled me in and kept going. Digging deep, I was able to jump on and stay with the group along with two others who'd joined them to create a six-man paceline (with one 'anchor'). Stayed together until Stargazers at which point the bean machine and one other dropped me and break-away partner from last week. We hung tough, and were able to keep them in sight, finished maybe 30 seconds back. Easy ride back to WC with Reuther, other Bob, and Scott.

dst: 37.31 miles
av: 17.2 mph (19.5 into D-town)
time: 2.09.41

Greg Loop Solo

Felt really good today. It was kind of interesting. There's Chris Carmichael telling me to work out in a pre-determined heart rate zone and in certain, yet varying, cadence zones adjusting my gear selection on the bike to stay within these criteria. Having neither cadence nor HR info, it was difficult to make sure that I was doing what I supposed to. I tried to watch the small army of cyclists that were working out under CC's direction in order to match their cadence. Accuracy issues notwithstanding, it was a decent workout. One which left me, my bike, and the floor beneath me drenched in sweat. My friend who'd loaned me the trainer and video had warned me about the sweating. I figured he was exaggerating. Missus got home from work late, so I was rushing just to meet the group at the usual spot, as soon as I crested the hill at the usual spot, there they were. Close one. Got in and worked up to the front. Felt antsy tonight. Also felt really good. But noone else seemed interested in getting things going. At each pull, I'd try to notch it up a bit. Finally, I said enough and went off the front. One other guy came with. Halfway up to Northbrook, I found myself wondering why I do this. Start out too hard on a ride where I have trouble finishing with the group. I reminded myself to ride within myself, but that was still fast enough to stay away. Kind of. About 3/4 of the way up to Northbrook, two guys caught and attacked me and my fellow escapee. We didn't respond. At Northbrook, two more bridged up and the four of us worked to pull in the new leaders. Caught them right before 82. Another chase group came up with another five or so, and we worked together for the rest of the ride, with only two falling off the pace. It felt awesome to finish with the lead group. Maybe all the riding is paying off. Or maybe it was actually getting a decent night's sleep.

dst: 32.89 miles
time: 1.42.14
av: 19.2 mph (21.1 to Downingtown -- moderate solo work back to WC)

Margaritas Make Your Legs Rubbery

Note to self (and the rest of the world): Margaritas are not a good pre-ride beverage. Last night we were fortunate enough to spend some time with some of our neighbors. One family invited the younger playgroup set over for taco night. And, apparently, taco night isn't complete without margaritas and sangria. And our hostess was talking and distracted while pouring at least the first of my two margaritas. The two corona lights probably didn't help, either. Essentially, he minimizes Lance Armstrong's accomplishments in order to support his notion that "Top Athletes Don't Ride Bicycles". I don't even know where to begin, but hurriedly tried to send the following email:

I haven't heard the claims that LA is the world's greatest athlete. Even if there were claims to this effect, I don't see the need to tear down the man, his sport, or his accomplishments in order to push your clearly pro-contact sport views. Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of both cycling and football -- American football. Yes, it is possible. But to tear down LA's achievements because you claim he couldn't take a single hit in pro football and therefore is not a top athlete is akin to saying that a Ferrari or a Porsche is not a world-class car because it could not win a collision with a Hummer. Different competitions -- athletic or otherwise -- require different skill sets. Given RW's success in pro football, I would argue that he has a high percentage of fast-twitch muscle fiber, which in fact, would make it very difficult for him to hang with the boys on Le Tour for very long IF at all. He just would not have the endurance. The professionals riding in the Tour average over 25 mph on most stages, I doubt RW could maintain 15 mph over 100 miles. This, however, does not mean that he is not a top athlete. LA is a top athlete, perhaps not THE top athlete, but I do not think anyone could make that claim.

The email couldn't get through, his mailbox is full. Arrived 30 minutes late for the 6:00PM start. It's all right though, as I had good work in getting there and sometimes my betrothed cannot get home in time, which is fine, at least I'm able to get out. Recovery seems to be getting a little better. Was able to play more off the front this time than the last, but did end up sitting out a lap. So better, but still plenty of room for improvement. Noticed Andy Neumann in the pack and got to speak with him for a while. A good dude who I haven't seen in too long a time. But I'm a pretty solid convert now. Don't get me wrong, I still believe in earning your downhills, in fact, I almost prefer climbing to descending. What really impressed me about the full-suspension was actually its ability to make the rear wheel hook up on the wet and slippery and ultra-technical stuff at French Creek. After a couple of pulls I lost touch with them though and got eaten up by the pack, and then dropped by the pack. Guess I need to work on recovery after hard efforts. Moderate effort on the way back to WC.

dst: 46.53 miles
time: 2.09.36
av: 21.5 mph

Ventured Inland

Went inland for a bit, then through Stone Harbor and Avalon.
dst: 40 miles
av: 20.4mph
Very windy today, but felt good up until a bug hit my helmet and dropped into my partially unzipped jersey, then proceeded to bite me no less than 3x. The boy child rode his bike the lenght of the promenade and then down on the street to 63rd street where we locked his bike up. the pack rolled up on us (reuther, scott g., myself) my hamstring (see previous post "bad test design") began to cramp. this, combined with the fact that the pack was already separated into a chase group and lead group, let me know this was going to be a hard ride. i was able to hang tough all the way up the hill past northbrook and almost to 82 before the pack dropped me. we were hauling at 27+ on a slight up grade in a serious paceline. unfortunately, this former mtb racer is not as fortunate as a former friend, who apparently was born knowing how to ride in a pack, and still have a lot to learn. at one point, after several of my faux pas pulls, this guy, Karl, gives me some pointers. don't try to accelerate so much at the front, don't pull so long. essentially, pull through and get off. i thought it was cool that he was willing to offer advice rather that just point and laugh behind my back. when we regrouped at Rita's water ice, i thanked him for his comments. He was cool. No roadie attitude. thanks, Karl.

*Interesting note: When riding you almost expect the rednecks to yell at you and give you a hard time. Go figure. Lots of guys from bean's. Other dudes who just look fast. Did this ride two weeks ago, and blew up going up the hill to northbrook. Tonight decided just sit-in, sit tight, and let the pack pull you along. No shame in learning the tactics. Well, at the top of the hill, one guy goes off, and while feeling good, I exert the self-control to sit-in. Then Reuther goes off, again I sit-in. Then four others go off. Heck, we're at the top of the hill and there's four of them. I got four pulls before I've got to really exert. When my turn comes around, I pull too long. Then as the others and the chase group go by I can't hang on the back. I seem to do this everytime I peel off when we're really moving. I misjudge how long its going to take me to get back up to speed. Once that gap forms that you can't, you might as well kiss that pack good-bye. embarrassing.

new pre-ride regimen?

time: 1:36:55
av: 19.1
dst: 30.76

great ride today -- despite being up too late and enjoying a bit too much frosty good cheer with my neighborhood posse. we were supposed to have a neighborhood softball game last night, but it was rained out. the two captains decided instead that we should meet at a local watering hole and have an air hockey tournament. brews were enjoyed there. then the after-party was held at the home of a newer neighbor with a pool table and kegerator built into the bar -- I had to go. Regardless, I felt like I could fly. I was attacking hills in a way that I haven't in years. It was great. Even on a very hilly course, we were averaging 20.0 mph at 45 min, and 19.5 mph until we had to cut through town and all its requisite lights.

jra

to get the lead out:

time: 1:08:47
av: 14.5
dst: 16.7

felt good to be out -- even if
